Generally the internal residual stresses (by bending, forming, welding, etc.) of equipment increase the tensile strength of metal. However the toughness and elongation are decreased.
Normalizing is done to refine the grain structure (somewhat increase tensile strength), improve machinability, relieve internal residual stresses (highly decrease tensile strength) and to improve mechanical properties (toughness and elongation) of low carbon steel and low alloy steels. As a result, the final tensile strength slightly decrease but the toughness is greatly improved.
Normalizing consists of heating the low carbon steel above the critical temperature Ac3 (about 900-950 deg.C) and holding at this temperature for a short time depending on the type of steel. To achieve homogenization of austenite, hypoeutectoid steels are heated to 30-40 deg.C above the Ac3, and held for 20-40 minutes at this temperature. Exceeding the indicated temperature and/or holding time may result in excessive grain growth.
In the mutipass welding, normally we can obtain the refined grain structure partially (at weld pool and beyond HAZ) due to normalizing effect, but there may be a great coarse grain structures in HAZ. If the weld joint is normalized, the coarse grain in HAZ will be transformed to fine grain structure. You may have to think about structure change (from ferrite/pearlite by slow cooling to bainite/martensite-brittle by rapid cooling) as well as grain size during welding and heat treatment. Normalizing products ferrite/pearlite structure and refined grain.
