그러나 두께가 1.5”보다 크고 and/or Field 용접부의 경우 and/or 내부에 Gas Burner를 이용한 PWHT의 경우는 모재 또는 용접직후의 경도보다 증가하게 될 가능성이 아주 높습니다.
LB-62L maintains adequate tensile strength over extended PWHT
Some weld joints where residual stresses are prone to concentrate (e.g. a crown plate to nozzle weld joint of
a spherical tank ) require postweld heat treatment ( PWHT) . As usual with ferritic weld metal , the
strength of LB-62L weld metal decreases as PWHT temperature and soaking time increase. However, LB-
62L weld metal maintains adequate tensile strength over the minimum tensile strength (550N/mm2) of A
537 Cl.2 steel even after extended PWHT as shown in Figure 3. In addition, some types of weld metal lose
notch toughness due to embrittlement caused by PWHT. LB-62 L weld metal , however , maintains
adequate notch toughness even after PWHT as shown in Figure 4.

The hardness test of the SA537 Class 2 material welding specimens has different hardness levels in the weld metal, HAZ, and base metal areas, depending on the grain size of the microstructure and the cooling rate of the material. Overall, the hardness value in HAZ is higher than base metal and weld metal with the highest value of 220 HV. However, the hardness of the parent metal, HAZ, and weld metal with variations in heat input showed no significant difference. The difference in Heat Input does not significantly affect the hardness results in the HAZ and weld metal area of the SA537 Class 2 material welded with E8018 electrodes and ER 80S-Ni2 filler. Hardness will increase if the resulting grain is small. This can occur because in smaller grains the movement of the dislocation will be more difficult. Meanwhile, if the cooling rate is fast, then the grains do not have time to change to become large so small grains have a higher hardness value than large grain sizes. The higher the heat input, the slower the cooling rate so that it can affect its lower hardness. The low hardness of the weld in the welding process using filler ER 80S-Ni2 is also influenced by the high level of nickel which has the property of increasing the ductility of the filler. Then in the HAZ area, the hardness is higher than the base metal area because the HAZ area is a part of the metal that is affected by direct heating from the welding process and experiences a fast cooling rate so that the distorted atoms increase the hardness value in the HAZ area. Then in the HAZ area, the hardness is higher than the base metal area also because of the dominance of the pearlite phase which is formed due to the influence of heat input.

RE:(2) FW: Hardness value increase after PWHT for Kobelco LB-62L Product
Dear Mr. Gyuhwag Lee,
I apologize for this late reply.
Generally speaking, as you mentioned, tensile strength and hardness values decrease after PWHT.
A possible reason for the increase in hardness values after PWHT is the effect of the hardness measurement location.
The hardness of weld metal differs depending on whether the measurement location is the nonaffected zone or the reheated zone. Assuming the measurement location is the final pass, if it is measured the nonaffected zone of the final pass, it is higher than the reheated zone.
For further verification of the validity of this result, possible methods include measuring the Vickers hardness at the center of weld metal in the thickness direction, checking the chemical composition of weld metal, and checking the tensile strength before and after PWHT.
If you can provide the following information, we can comment it further.
- Actual test results
- Hardness measurement location
- PWHT conditions
- Are the welding conditions for as-welded and PWHT the same?
- Welding conditions
- Polarity AC or DC
- Preheat/inter-pass temperature
- Heat input
- Welding position

Dear Robert Melvin
Thank you for your reply
I know the hardness values are within the limit.
My concern is why hardness values were increased after PWHT. This is against general understanding.
Do you have any experience or data or technical report to support this result?
Regards
from Gyuhwag Lee

Title : FW: Hardness value increase after PWHT for Kobelco LB-62L Product
Dear Mr. Gyuhwag Lee,
We would like to comment something concerning your email.
Although there may be microscopic precipitation hardening due to Nb, V, Ti, etc., it is unlikely that macroscopic effects such as hardness value and tensile strength will be affected.
Also, the amount of Ti is not very large.
We do not know your welding conditions, hardness measurement locations, PWHT conditions, etc., but it may be within the range of variation.
We feel that 150HB is too low for this material and as-welded.

Dear Sirs
Good morning
I received a report from a project like below:
Hardness values of a spherical tank were increased after PWHT
- base metal : ASTM A537 Cl.2 45mm, hardness values on MTC(Mill Test Certificate) are 190~250 HB
- hardness values of HAZ & base metal before/after PWHT are similar values on MTC
- hardness values of weld metal before PWHT are 150~200 HB while hardness values of weld metal after PWHT are around 200 HB
- welding consumable LB-62L (AWS A5.5 E8016-C1) (please refer to attachment)
Why hardness values are increased after PWHT? Generally hardness values are reduced after PWHT.
To figure out this case, I found "kwt_special_low_temp_single.pdf" (please refer to attachment)
As per the statement, "embrittlement caused by PWHT ............,". It means that hardness values will be increased due to PWHT but not more than requirement"
As per MTC of LB-62L, LB-62L has Titanium content (0.018%)
In my personal conclusion, LB-62L has a certain content of Titanium and due to this Titanium elements, hardness values are increased on weld metal
Please check my statement and send your advice shortly
