ASME Sec.VIII has four joint categories (A to D) for pressure retaining parts.
As you know the joint categories are based on the possibility of failure by stress mode of Timosenko Theory.
They have different requirements for NDE, joint efficient (for strength calculation), and PWHT according to the weakest joint "A" (long seam in shell) through the most safety joint "D" (shell to nozzle). See the attachment.
The joint E & F are not controlled by ASME Sec. VIII. However most manufacturers are using the joint categories for their QA-QC program for all weld joints on pressure vessel. For instance, Joint E may be for reinforcement pad to shell in semi-pressure boundary while Joint F may be for non pressure boundary (i.e., skirt/saddle parts).
Meanwhile AWS D1.1 (Structural Welding Code-Steel) has some different categories (stress category) which are based on the possibility of failure by fatigue stress. It is completely different concept from that of ASME Sec. VIII.
The collapse of Sungsoo Bridge was caused by the violation of the stress category application (design vs. actual).
