제목과 관련하여, vendor 에서 자재가 구하기 어렵다는 이유로
A387 Gr. 11 Class 1 대신에 동일재질의 Class 2 를 사용하겠다고
문의를 해왔습니다.
ASTM 을 찾아보니
class 1 class 2

인장강도 60~85ksi 75~100 ksi
항복강도 35ksi 45ksi
연신율 19%/22% 18%/22%
class 2 는 class 1에 비해 강도도 좋고 연신율은 조금 떨어지지만
크게 차이가 없습니다.
그러나 사업주는 class 2 에 대해 아래와 같은 메세지를
보내왔습니다.

The reason I ask is that we use the Class 2 material in coke
drums.

* Class 1 : annealed (TS=60-85ksi, YS=min. 35ksi, elongation=min.22% (<2" thick)
* Class 2 : normalized-tempered (TS=75-100ksi, YS=min. 45ksi, elongation=min.22% (<2" thick)
For good design and longer life time against bulging, most coke drums in the world are constructed with class 2 (Gr.11, Gr.12, and Gr.22, etc.) with 410 SS clad because it is more practical/economic material than class 1. Generally a good guideline for coke drum materials selection in high temperature fatigue environment (not creep zone) is normalized-high strength Cr-Mo steel with more than 20% elongation.
For reference, our company has been operating 14 coke drums (additional 4 coke drums for new projects as well) which are class 2 during last 5-40 years.
