Full Penetration Weld refers to the configuration of the weld preparation that a weld has that covers 100% of the required thickness* of the plate/part or plates/parts to be welded without notch effect** in the butt, fillet, corner, and other joints.
* the thinner thickness in dissimilar thickness joint
** unacceptable undercut & LF or others in the weld.
Meanwhile the weld edge preparation is not directly related with the full penetration welding.
The Full Penetration for the Joint Efficiency (1.0) is a necessary condition, but not a sufficient condition.
The J.E or JGF* = 1.0 (as a maximum) is only applicable to butt joint in ASME. But the lower values (i.e., 0.95, 0.85, 0.7, etc.) on the butt joint depend on RT application type (100%, full, spot, no, etc.), seam type (straight, spiral, etc.), butt type (single or double), and deposit height per code.
