Normally the joint type and expansion requirement should be specified in the P.O. requirements with notes in the drawings or datasheets unless there are the specific requirements in the company (client) spec.

If you have to apply ASME Sec.VIII-1 and API 660 and there are no specific requirements in your client’s specifications and P.O. requisition, it may be a change order.

First of all, please check the P.O., the client’s spec., and approved drawing/calculation sheets. If no requirements, please make a change order without hesitation. Please refer the following survey information.

[Survey of Industry Codes/Standards]

- TEMA (2007), S & T H/EX, RCB-7.31 : Expanded tube-to-tubesheet joints are standard.
- API 660 (2007), S & T H/EX, 7.6.7 : The tube-to-tubesheet joint shall be made by one of the following methods;
a) strength-welded only;
b) strength-welded and expanded;
c) seal-welded and expanded.
- API 661 (2006) Air Cooler, 9.3.2 : one groove in tubesheet less than 1” thick/ two grooves in tubesheet, 1” thick and above
- ASME Sec. VIII-1, UHX (2009): No requirements. However, Rho (tube expansion parameter in calculation) = 0 for no expansion; = 0.5 half expansion; = 1 for full expansion.

[Survey of Company Standards]

- Company V : Tube expansion is required for all tube joint designs, including seal and strength welded joints.
- Company E : Normally tubes shall extend 1/8 in. +/- 1/16 in. (3 mm +/- 1.5 mm) beyond the tubesheet.
- Company S : If roller-expanded joints are utilized, the tube-hole grooves shall be in the base material and not in any applied cladding or weld overlay.
- Company B : The following combinations of tube expansion and tube end welding may be adopted depending on service conditions:
1. Expanded only.
2. Strength welded only.
3. Expanded and seal welded.
4. Strength welded and lightly expanded.
5. Strength welded and expanded.
6. Back face welded.
