엔지니어링이란 단어가 주는 의미가 무엇일까요?
우리는 공대를 나오면 다 엔지니어인가요?
화공과를 나오면, 화공엔지니어, 기계과를 나오면 기계엔지니어...가 되는 것이 아닙니다.
공학적 지식을 베이스로 해서 행해지는 업무를 할때, 엔지니어라고 할 수 있습니다.
명확하게 엔지니어링으로 구분되어지는 직업이 있습니다.
발전 Plant나 화공 Plant 등의 경우, 명확하게 설계라는 직무가 있고, 이렇게 기본, 상세, 제작 설계를 하는 경우, 이 업무하는 이들을 엔지니어라고 합니다.
처음 설계를 할 때는 많이 시행오차가 있었겠지만, 현재의 그 업무를 수행하는 Young 엔지니어들은 단순 업무처럼 느껴질 수도 있습니다.
근데 그게 확 까지는 경우가 있죠. 문제가 생겼을 때입니다. 역학적으로, 재질이, 부식이, 용접부 크랙이 생기면, 원인을 파악해야 하고, 그로 인한 대책을 마련해서 Solution을 제시해야 합니다. 이런 것을 해결할 수 있다면 엔지니어라고 할 수 있죠.
엔지니어링과 엔지니어에 대한 책이 많이 있습니다. 외국책으로... 국내에는 별로 없습니다.
발전소 설계의 경우, 시스템 엔지니어와 CAD와 물리적이 배치를 하는 테크니션이 있습니다. 둘의 업무가 다른데, 지금은 그다지 구분짓지 않습니다?
하지만, 첨부의 Introduction to engineering에 비주얼하게 구분하고 있습니다.
아래는 훌륭한 엔지니어가 누구인지도 잘 설명하고 있습니다. 'Engineering Fundamentals, An Introduction to Engineering' 이란 책에 있는 내용입니다.
• Engineers are problem solvers.
• Good engineers have a firm grasp of the fundamental principles that can be used to solve many different problems.
• Good engineers are analytical, detailed oriented, and creative. • Good engineers have a desire to be life-long learners. For example, they take continuing education classes, seminars, and workshops to stay abreast of new innovations and technologies.
• Good engineers have written and oral communication skills that equip them to work well with their colleagues and to convey their expertise to a wide range of clients.
• Good engineers have time management skills that enable them to work productively and efficiently.
• Good engineers have good “people skills” that allow them to interact and communicate effectively with various people in their organization.
• Engineers are required to write reports. These reports might be lengthy, detailed, and technical, containing graphs, charts, and engineering drawings. Or they may take the form of a brief memorandum or an executive summary.
• Engineers are adept at using computers in many different ways to model and analyze various practical problems.
• Good engineers actively participate in local and national disciplinespecific organizations by attending seminars, workshops, and meetings. Many even make presentations at professional meetings.
• Engineers generally work in a team environment where they consult each other to solve complex problems. Good interpersonal and communication skills have become increasingly important now because of the global market.
엔지니어의 역할론과 지름길, 그리고 규범 등은 저의 여러 글을 통해 이미 소개하였기에 이곳에선 제목을 중심으로 북미의 경우를 조금 보충해 봅니다.
Engineer는 기본적으로 4yrs (3-5 yrs) Engineering 대학 교육을 이수해야 하고 본인 업부 분야의 design (calculation, drawing, planning, specifications, reporting, analysis, etc.) 능력을 보유해야 합니다. Engineering 대학 교육 이수자가 견적, 구매, Project Engineer, PM, QA-QC, Inspector 등에 종사할 경우도 Engineer로 불리기 위해서는 이 능력의 기초를 요구합니다. 경력과 직위가 쌓이면 당연히 Problem Solver and/or Decision Maker로 발전하겠지요. 한편, 북미의 여러 주에서는 해당 주의 P.E. (professional engineer) 를 획득하지 않으면 명함 (business card)에 “xxx Engineer” 라는 Title을 사용하지 못하게 하고 있습니다. 특히, 본인 분야가 아닌 대학 전공을 한 사람이 현 Engineering분야에서 일할 경우, 학력을 기본으로한 P.E. 시험을 치를 자격을 갖지 못합니다.
Technician은 학력에 상관없이 설계 아닌 기술을 (제작, 설치, 검사, etc.) 확보하고 있는 사람을 말하는데 고졸 또는 전문 대학 졸업 (2yr) 이상 and/or 기술 자격증을 요구하는 경우가 대부분입니다. 제작, 시공, 검사 등에서의 이들의 역할은 아주 다양하고 중요합니다. 이 중 Management능력을 가진 탁월한 사람들은 Manager나 Director 및 CEO가 되기도 합니다. Steve Jobs나 Bill Gates도 여기에 속하지요.
추가로, 북미의 중견 회사나 대기업에서는 각 Position에 대해 여러 Grade 를 두게 되는데 각 Grade에는 경력, 학력은 물론이고 (여기까지는 대개 한국도 마찬가지임) Role & Responsibility, 능력, 자격 등에 대한 상세한 세부 항목을 10-20개씩 두어 문제 발생 시 책임 한계와 인사의 공정성을 확보하고 있습니다.
'정보화시대에 엔지니어와 과학자를 위한 평생 학습' 이런 책이 있습니다.
저는 엔지니어가 아닌 일반인으로서의 평생학습은 생각해보았는데, 엔지니어로서 평생학습은 그냥 취미로 공부하려 했습니다.
근데 이런 책은 엔지니어로서 평생학습을 논합니다. 엔지니어로 죽으라는 야그! ㅎ
앞에 정보화시대라는 것이 뭔가 엔지니어나 과학자들이 가진 능력으로 정보를 잘 활용하는측면이 있을 것으로 보는게 아닌가 생각됩니다.
네이버에 시니어를 위한 일자리를 만드는 사업이 많이 있습니다. 저도 그런 일자리에 관심이 있구요.
평생 학습과 평생 일자리? 시대가 요구하는 것이 아닐까 쉽습니다.
저는 특히 아래의 3가지 항목이 크게 와 닿습니다.
